Kiwanis Club of Andalusia
WHAT IS KIWANIS: Kiwanis is a
service organization whose overall objectives are:
TO GIVE primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material
values of life.
TO ENCOURAGE the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human
relationships.
TO PROMOTE the adoption and the application of higher social, business,
and professional standards.
TO DEVELOP by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and
serviceable citizenship.
TO PROVIDE through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring
friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
TO COOPERATE in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and
high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice,
patriotism, and good will.
The Kiwanis Club of Andalusia was chartered on December 17, 1947, under the
principles of Kiwanis International to work for a better quality of life for
the citizens of Andalusia, our state, our nation and internationally.
The Kiwanis Club of Andalusia is much more than a luncheon club. Please remember that it is a great "SERVICE CLUB". The success of the club depends upon member participation and leadership in serving the needs of this community. YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF MEMBERSHIP SHOULD BE ON THIS BASIS.
Kiwanis Motto: We Build
We build character, we build community pride, we build cooperative, we build self-confidence.
Club meets weekly on Monday 12:00 -1:00 at Tabby D's restaurant in town for meal and program.
Service is at the heart of every
Kiwanis International club, no matter where in the world it’s located. Kiwanis
members stage nearly 150,000 service projects, devote more than 6 million hours
of service and raise nearly $100 million every year for communities, families
and projects.
•Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915.
•In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even
then, members were serving the needs of the poor.
•By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service.
•Kiwanis became an international organization in 1916 with the organization of
the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario.
•Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962 when
worldwide expansion was approved.
•Until 1987, Kiwanis was a male-only organization. But after years of debate and
growing support, women’s membership was received overwhelmingly.
Service Leadership
Kiwanis International empowers people at every stage of life to become competent, capable, and compassionate leaders by helping them learn to help others. Through its Service Leadership Programs, Kiwanis teaches young leaders new ways to change the world by serving one child and one community at a time.
We define Service Leadership as the next step beyond service learning. Once a young person fully understands the concept of learning by helping others, he or she begins to grow personally as a leader.
The Service Leadership concept is based on the philosophy of Servant Leadership, a term coined by Robert K. Greenleaf to define a leader who is servant first. “It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first,” Greenleaf wrote. “Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.”
